Wine is not a good source of nutrition for the most part – most of the calories come from carbohydrate rather than protein and fats. Red wine does contain certain vitamins and minerals, however. Refer to the calorie calculator for your favorite wine to determine the calories and nutritional value.

Vitamins and Minerals

Red grapes are the primary ingredient in red wine and they are full of valuable vitamins and minerals. The mineral found in the highest concentration in red wine is manganese – a single 5-ounce serving of red wine contains about 0.2 milligrams of manganese which is between 9 and 11% your daily recommended value. Red wine is also a good source of various B vitamins as well as vitamins A and K.

Cholesterol Levels

Not only is wine a good source of certain vitamins and minerals, but it may also help to boost your HDL – high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol) levels. Wine may also help to prevent your LDL or bad cholesterol levels from getting too high and damaging the lining of your arteries. According to a recent study, individuals who consumed a glass or two of wine each day had significantly higher HDL levels because the wine helped to lower LDL cholesterol before it clogged the vessels and arteries.
The moderate consumption of wine has been linked to several health benefits including improved heart health and reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes. Refer to the calorie calculator for your favorite wine to determine the calories and nutritional value.

Improved Heart Health

Red wine contains an antioxidant called resveratrol that provides a number of heart health benefits. Though it may not benefit individuals who already have heart disease, the resveratrol in wine may help to lower blood pressure and thus reduce your risk for heart disease and heart attack. Red wine also contains procyanidins which help to protect your heart against heart disease.

Reduced Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

The results of several research studies have revealed that moderate wine drinkers have a reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes. Drinking red wine in moderation may reduce your risk of suffering a blood clot-related stroke by as much as 50%. The resveratrol in wine may also have benefits for your metabolism and it may control some of the biomarkers seen in diabetes cases.
